The high school I attended in grade 8 was nestled in the Cape Town Company Gardens. I used to get dropped off in the mornings, but waiting outside for the bell to ring was always a great chance to catch up with friends before school started.
I remember one morning when a group of us were hanging out on a bench outside the school, and Marvin called me over—he had a song I had to hear. Marvin was a year or two older than me, but we shared a love for rap and music in general.
The memory is crystal clear. He flipped open his V360 and played a song that, in hindsight, probably changed my life. It was Replacement Girl by Drake, featuring Trey Songz. That was the first time I ever heard a Drake song, and I knew right then—this dude was about to be my favorite artist.
Sixteen years later, that hasn’t changed.
With the release of $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, Drake has given me an album I haven’t been able to put down since its release. It’s all I can—and want to—listen to.
This is the album I’ve always wanted from him. I love when Drake sings, croons, and complains about his love life. So when he announced the collab album with PARTYNEXTDOOR, I figured I’d be getting more singing than rapping—but not this.
This is everything to me.
This isn’t a review of the album (not my expertise), but I just wanted to show appreciation for my favorite artist and be thankful for this masterpiece. I can’t even pick a favorite song because I don’t skip a single track. But for now, I’ll embed my top four.
$tay $exy.
